Tower of the Udayeshvara temple at Udayapur - 1875
Photograph of the tower of the Udayeshvara temple at Udayapur, taken by Deen Dayal in the 1870s. The Udayeshvara temple was erected in 1080 by the Paramara king Udayaditya as recorded in an inscription and represents one of the finest example of the style of that dynasty. The temple faces east and stands on a platform approached by a stairway flanked by large Shaiva door guardians. The sanctuary and the mandapa have stepped, almost circular plans and are decorated with remarkable sculpture panels. The superstructure is curved and consists of many tiers of miniature towers with arch-like motifs on the sides and is crowned by a large amalaka. In the middle of each side of the tower there is a band with arched ornaments, typical of the Paramara style, rising from an arched niche with a sculpture of dancing Shiva.
