Madhukeshwara Temple

Wonderful Nritya mandapa of Madhukeshwara Temple Banavasi, Uttara Kannada, Karnataka.

Mayurasharma(Mayuravarma) 345–365 CE founder of Kadamba dynasty (Kadambas of Banavasi) built this Bhagwan Shiva temple initially. Later expanded by Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas & Hoysalas.

Banavasi is an ancient temple town & was capital Kadambas. Earliest Kannada inscriptions like  Halmidi inscription and Talagunda Inscription are attributed to Kadambas of Banavasi. The Kadambas ruled the entire present day Karnataka & were the first to use Kannada, the language of the soil at an administrative level.

(The Ashoka rock edict found at Brahmagiri dated to 230 BCE contains Identifiable Kannada words too)
