This creature is called Yali ( Vyala in Sanskrit). The Yali is born from the union of an elephant and Lion. It is stronger than elephant & faster than lion.These chimeras were chosen by devas to guard heaven. We can find the sculpture of Yali in many Ancient, Medieval Indian Temples. It represents the union of unlimited energy, immense strength & is an auspicious symbol. Generally its carved above an elephant sculpture.
