 Architecture of Mallikarjuna Temple, Basralu

Mallikarjuna Temple, Basaralu is famous for its ancient architecture.  It has famous sculptures that make Hoysala architecture a work of art.  The temple is a three sacred scheme.  Here all three pilgrimages are intrinsically associated with a mantapa.  There is a tower only at the top of the central temple which makes it easily visible from outside.  Nearby temples do not have towers and are internally connected to the hall, although this is not clearly visible from the outside.

The Hoysala temples use a platform called Jagati, on which this temple stands.  This platform provides a pathway for devotees to walk and also adds visual appeal.  The top of the temple has a symbol of a lion slaying which is a part of Hoysala architecture.  At the bottom of the temple are six patikas, which show scenes of war elephants, horse riders, Ramayana, Mahabharata and Bhagwat and the last laugh.
