Majestic Chitradurga Fort bathed in the golden glow!
Popularly known as an impenetrable fortress, it is one of the country’s strongest hill forts from the last five centuries.
A beloved landmark in Karnataka, Chitradurga Fort is not so popular among the rest of the world. It serves as a cultural monument and place of unity for Kannadigas while much of its history has been marked by bloodshed.
Built between the 11th and 13th centuries, the Fort have gone through the hands of several rulers, from the Chalukyas to Hoysalas and the Vijayanagara Kings and had undergone many transformations. As per mythology, Chitradurga Fort is supposed to be the place of Hidimba Rakshasa of the epic Mahabharata.
The Fort houses 18 temples in its upper part and one huge temple in its lower part. Among them, the Hidimbeshwara Temple is the oldest and most interesting one which is carved out of a rock and has the influence of the Dravidian culture, and also displays a broken tooth of Hidimba.
